1. Play Disc Golf
Odessa Parks and Recreation maintains three free disc golf courses where you can try out this fun, casual sport. You can visit the 18-basket par three course at Comanche Trail Park West, 900 S County Rd W; the 21-basket par three course at Comanche Trail Park South, 301 W I-20; or the 9-basket par three course at 625 W Pool Rd. 2. Visit the Odessa Meteor Crater
Check out the site where a meteor landed in Odessa more than 62,000 years ago, leaving a hole more than 15 ft deep and 550 ft wide. A representative from the University of Texas identified the hole as a meteor crater in the 1920s, and it was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1965. The Odessa meteor crater site has been open for public visits since 2002.
In addition to viewing the hole, you can also browse the Meteor Crater Museum on-site. The museum has samples of the many meteorites recovered from nearby sites, including a 70-lb rock. It’s open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. at 5599 Meteor Crater Rd. Admission to the site is free.
3. Swim and Picnic at Floyd Gwin Park
Bring your friends and a picnic lunch to this sprawling green space in Odessa. You can enjoy your food in the shaded pavilions while your kids play on the nearby playground equipment. The park also has baseball fields, volleyball courts, soccer fields, and basketball courts. A recent expansion to the 45-acre facility added a lighted parking lot, enlarged the playground, and added a lighted walking track and concession stand. It’s located at 1015 N County Road W.
4. Explore Local Hiking and Biking Trails
You can travel several miles of designated trails within Odessa on two wheels or by foot. The longest path, at Comanche Trail Park West at 900 S County Rd W, is a 2.2-mile loop. Comanche Trail Park South at 301 W I-20 includes a 1.6-mile loop. Many parks also have shorter trails, so you can find the best option depending on your skill level.
